Spend a day visiting the side by side family homes of Bess of Hardwick, one of the richest and most remarkable women of Elizabethan England. Hardwick Old Hall is now roofless, visitors can still ascend four floors to view surviving decorative plasterwork, as well as the kitchens and service rooms with an audio tour. Hardwick Hall New is one of the most splendid houses in England. Built in the 1590s, and unaltered since; yet it’s huge windows and high ceilings make it feel strikingly modern. It’s six towers make a dramatic skyline. Climbing up through the house, from one spectacular floor to the next, is a thrilling architectural experience. The Old and New Halls will make a memorable day out in Derbyshire.

Admission Prices: Hardwick Old Hall- Free to English Heritage Members, £4.80 (A), £2.90 (C),  £12.50 (Family)
